Elizabeth Sterba (she/her/hers) has been a child, community, and social justice advocate in the Sacramento area for over two decades. Liz's work began in her early teens through involvement in a neighborhood health initiative, and grew into service on several local, city- and county-wide efforts throughout high school and into her undergraduate work at California State University, Sacramento, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child Development in 2003.

Beginning in 2001, Liz worked for several years as the co-director of a school-based community center and leader of the Tahoe/Colonial Collaborative, here she led grassroots advocacy and engagement efforts, built relationships with neighbors, stakeholders, and elected officials, and provided children’s health education programs and community-building activities. In this capacity Liz also served as a community faculty member for the nationally-recognized “Communities & Health Professionals Together” (CHPT) program, which teaches young physicians and public health professionals about social capital, social determinants of health and the need to work collaboratively with patients and their communities.

After being recruited by UC Davis to manage the CHPT project in 2004, Liz grew the program over her eight-year tenure to one that trained more than 200 primary care residents at UC Davis in partnership several community partners throughout the Sacramento valley region. During this time, the program won several national awards and was published four times in peer-reviewed journals. Her work earned Liz a seat on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Community Pediatrics Training Initiative Advisory Council and invitations to present at national meetings. In addition, while at UC Davis, Liz worked as the Community Relations Coordinator for the National Children’s Study – Sacramento site, organizing grassroots focus groups, coordinating the CAB and external communications. In 2005 Liz entered the Community & Regional Development graduate program at UC Davis, earning her Master of Sciences degree in 2007 after completing her thesis by designing and implementing a qualitative research project exploring the impact of the CHPT project on one partner community.

Looking to return to her immediate passion – serving children and families – Liz joined the Sacramento City Unified School District in 2011 as the Coordinator of two school- based Student Support Centers where she leads a staff of social workers, social work and nursing student interns, and community partners in providing a wide array of support services to students and their families, including mental health and crisis response, connections to basic resources, academic and attendance support, case management, and more. In her role at SCUSD Liz also manages data collection and evaluation, and social media communications for her department, Student Support & Health Services; in addition to serving as Field Instructor for undergraduate and graduate interns from California State University, Sacramento. In an effort to round out her academic training, in 2018 Liz earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Boston University. In that same year she joined the faculty at Sacramento City College’s Sociology Department as an Assistant Adjunct Professor, and in 2019 she earned her credential in School Social Work.

In her free time, Liz enjoys social justice and advocacy work, exploring the outdoors with her partner and her niece and nephew, reading, yoga, and visiting the beach.
